Feeling old!

Wednesday, July 27th, 2011

Hi! Thanks for visiting my blog. If you're new here, you may want to subscribe, either by RSS reader or by email.

You may also like to check out an offer I've put together for you at my other website!

My baby boy has turned 15…yep…that’s right 15 years old.

The last 15 years have gone by so fast and yet I can still remember him as a baby. He was my first and the one that threw me headlong into motherhood.

We’ve been through a lot, eldest and me, and as a result I think we’re pretty close and have a good relationship.

He got a wad of birthday money so tomorrow I’m taking him shopping to Birmingham where he wants to buy clothes!!! A sure sign that he’s growing up. I’ll take a few coins to spend and he can take his stash. I’ve also promised I’ll take him for his lunch. He can even choose the venue!

I’m really looking forward to a day out with one of my best pals…..and how many mums of teenagers can say that?

Diamonds are a boys best friend?

Wednesday, July 20th, 2011

So we’re now at the stage of buying wedding rings for each other, well I say each other, OH already bought mine when he bought my engagement ring.

It’s gorgeous! White gold studded with tiny diamonds and designed to fit the engagement ring perfectly.

But I just don’t know what sort of ring to buy OH? White gold for sure, but do I go with diamonds or is that a bit feminine on a man? Also, can we be sure where the diamonds are from? You hear so many terrible stories, though it is reassuring that companies such as Diamonds International are giving back to  communities.

I guess ultimately it’s up to him, but I’d rather stick to a plain wedding band.

Anniversary gifts

Saturday, July 16th, 2011

Ok….so I know I’m not married yet, but I’m already thinking about an anniversary gift for him.

It’s probably because my cousin and her husband recently celebrated their third wedding anniversary which is leather! (Who thinks these things up?) She could have bought him some obvious leather items…..instead she found an author whose surname is Leather, and bought a couple of his books! She had no idea whether these books were any good, but what a brilliant and creative idea!

Men, I find, are very difficult to buy for. I don’t know any friends who wouldn’t appreciate a scarf, flowers, chocolates, smellies, jewellery, clothes,  a watch or a cuddly toy to name but a few!

In fact, last year for her 40th, I bought the same cousin 40 gifts! Do you know what? It was easy!! In fact I could have bought her 50 or 60 gifts and I wouldn’t have run out of ideas. My OH on the other hand is incredibly hard to buy for, unless it’s a book about business or computing and that’s just boring!

So, no doubt I won’t be able to move with all the flowers I’ll recieve on our anniversary’s, as for him….lets hope there are plenty of authors whose surnames are paper, cotton, wood, china etc.

House extensions

Wednesday, July 13th, 2011

Two of my neighbours are currently having  building work done on their houses.

My immediate neighbour has worked on his for some time. The poor guy is working on it alone and as he’s self-employed he has to go off for a few weeks to earn some more money before he can carry on! It’s been a long old process.

The problem we have, is that he works on it over the weekend! That means early Saturday and Sunday morning starts, often finishing late in the evening.

He’s a lovely guy and we’re very tolerant, especially as we had our own house knocked about a few years ago, which I’m sure didn’t best please some of the neighbours. In fact I know it didn’t! I still remember a very angry daughter of one neighbour almost breaking my front door down to have a go at me about something that was easily resolved….people eh!

Anyway….I decided early on in my neighbour’s renovation process that I wasn’t going to be like that. We are flexible, understanding and as a result when my OH pops ’round at 7pm on a Sunday to ask very politely if he could stop now, he does and everyone is very friendly about it.

Next door to him are my other neighbours and they are having a big kitchen diner put  on the back of their house. I feel really sorry for them because yesterday the builders, having finished the extension, knocked through into their house. My neighbour shouted to us over the fence a couple of days ago…’How did you guys put up with all this when you had it done?’

Great question….how did we? We had a double height extension, which meant knocking through both upstairs and downstairs. We had bathroom walls moved, an en suite fitted and a brand new kitchen. At one point we only had one inhabitable room!

Amidst all of this, I went into hospital for an emergency caesarean and came home to chaos, bringing our new bundle of joy into a dusty, noisy environment. At least he can sleep through anything now!

It’s all worth it in the end though, we have a great house and soon our neighbours will be just as lovely and pretty soon they will barely remember all the mess and noise they went through.

I’d do it again, though I’d probably just erect a purpose-built metal building the next time.

We love to Geocache!

Tuesday, July 12th, 2011

What do you mean…what do I mean?

I don’t know why it’s called Geocache, though I’ve no doubt some techie would be able to tell me.

The Geocache is a treasure. You log into www.geocache.com, put in the area you want to search and in return you get a series of geocaches that people have designed. Choose which one you want, print off any hints and tips, put the coordinates into a handheld GPS system (for us it’s the iPhone) and off you go!

The geocache that you eventually find could be anything! Usually it’s a jar or a box with some treasure inside that other geocahers have left and there is usually a notebook and pencil so you can log in. Once you’ve found your ‘cache, you can upload your story and photo’s online for other treasure hunters to read.

It certainly livens up a dull Sunday and is a cheap way of entertaining the kids during the summer holidays. My lot love doing it, plus we’ve explored some parts of our local area that we didn’t even know existed!

It’s also a great way to explore new areas. If you’re going away somewhere you can find geocaching sites before you go.

We’ve also been advised to get a geocaching chirp. Apparently the best chirp is to be found in the US where they are big geocahers, but I’m not entirely sure how it works so I’m going to leave that one for now.

If you’ve never tried geocaching, I can highly recommend it. If you’ve got a smart phone with a built-in GPS system you don’t even need any fancy equipment.

We’ll definitely be doing it during the impending school holidays!

Boys and fighting!

Monday, July 11th, 2011

What is it about boys and fighting?

My boys can burst into a wrestling match at the drop of a hat!

When middle gets home from school, his first port of call, after raiding the fridge, is to attack youngest who is usually sitting quite peacefully watching Cbeebies at the time.

They roll around on the floor and pin each other down, not unlike the photograph opposite. The majority of the time they are squealing in delight, though occasionally there are tears and accidental bumps and bruises.

It’s when eldest gets involved that it can get really messy! There are no rules, no boundaries and sometimes I wonder if their objective is to kill each other.

I’m sure that I have read somewhere that boys have to fight, something to do with their development. And boys don’t grow up! My OH also joins in whenever he can and it’s not unusual for all four of them to be throwing each other around the front room.

I’m seriously considering buying them some wrestling headgear because I’m sure it’s only a matter of time before someone gets really hurt. And it’ll probably be me as I try and beak them up!

Another trip to the hospital

Friday, July 8th, 2011

With such a big family, it stands to reason that we spend time at hospital appointments.

I personally think the NHS is fantastic and I won’t hear a bad word said about it. I’ve had two pretty major operations, including an emergency C-section, and the care I received was second to none.

But even so, sitting around waiting for your appointment can be tedious and boring, especially with young children.

A couple of weeks ago, I was chatting with my cousin about a mutual friend of ours. We were talking about how clever he is. He has the most amazing garden, full of delicious, home grown fruit and vegetables. He’s recently kitted out his old transit van and turned it into a camper van complete with a plasma screen TV, foldaway double bed and the most incredible lighting system. An all round clever chap.

So what has all this got to do with hospitals?

I asked my cousin what this clearly very talented man did for a living.

‘He works at the hospital, repairing electronic equipment like heart monitiors, point of care carts and life support machines.’

Wow!

I for one didn’t even think about all the incredible, unseen work that goes on in a hospital.

The next time we’re waiting on an appointment, I’m going to give some thought to all the amazing people keeping the hospital going and keeping us all well.

It’s almost the summer holidays…again

Friday, July 1st, 2011

In exactly five days time, eldest will be breaking up from school…again.

Nothing breaks up a year like the long, school holidays.

Last year I booked up several camping trips and the holidays simply flew by! But not this year…oh no….I’ve managed to organise absolutely nothing. Zip…zilch…nowt…you got it….nil!!

Now that my bakery business is taking off, I’ve had time to think of little else…except of course the wedding.

Eldest is being whisked away to Italy by his mostly absent father, so that is obviously great for him, but as for the other two horrors!! Plus we’ve got my soon to be step daughter staying for a couple of week and if mum don’t organise anything, nobody organises anything!

I wonder if Aldi still have that speacial offer on Gin!
